Best Year Ever!

Best Year Ever aYes, that’s right… we are expecting this to be the “Best Year Ever” in our home (BYE for short).  I have never been one to make silly New Years resolutions because they are always dropped within a couple weeks and nothing ever really comes of them other than regret and disappointment in yourself.  I don’t need that 😉

However, this year my husband and I came across this course called “5 Days To Your Best Year Ever” by Michael Hyatt.  He designed it for “busy, high-achievers” like me… well at least that is how I would like to think of myself.  My past is spotted with holes of unrealized goals because life just “got” in the way.  In reality I haven’t found the right thing to keep me on the right track.  I had never learned how to plan, create real goals, and I had never learned how to put those goals into workable action.  That is where this course comes in and it has been amazing.

Yes, we just started this the first of the year, so no we haven’t seen the end results yet, but after all the work we have put into this I believe it will be our BYE because we now have clear have working steps for every goal and more importantly, our reason WHY.  I will be sharing about our walk throughout the year, as well as about aspects of all of my goals I have set for myself.  Some are personal and fun, others are serious!  All are good.  I may not hit them all… but I will never reach them if I never try and I never have a plan to work.

Here are my goals for this year… of course simplified for this blog. 😉

  1.  To cultivate a stronger and more pure relationship with Jesus so I know His voice better and I will follow Him no matter what.
  2.  To cultivate a more vibrant and Godly marriage.
  3.  To pay down debt.
  4.  To get healthier.
  5.  To treat myself well.
  6.  To read more books.
  7.  To be a better mom and homeschool teacher.
  8.  To revamp my blog and write again.
  9.  To improve my hand-lettering.

Best Year Ever 1aNow of course my goals in my workbook are much more specific with great action and purpose. What I just posted is very general and if they were left that way wouldn’t get accomplished because they are ambiguous.  That is why I love this course, it gets you into the meat of the matter.

So, as I blog this year, the things in my life that fall into those categories will be on the list to share.

What changes are you making this year?  Like Michael Hyatt says, “Nothing great ever happens in the comfort zone!”

Here’s to our Best Year Ever!

Three Ways You Are A Leader in Everyday Life … and how to be a better one

Tricia Goyer is one of my favorite authors and I have the privilege to be able to have her here as a guest blogger!  Her most recent book, which you might have heard me talk about, is called “Lead Your Family Like Jesus.”  It is a book written by her, Phil Hodges and Ken Blanchard.  You can see the first of my three reviews here, “Lead Your Family Like Jesus.”

LeadYourFamily_1.99In her guest blog with us she is going to discuss what it means to be a leader and how to be a better one.  I hope you are truly blessed by her wisdom and for a limited time you can get her book on Kindle for only $1.99 which is an amazing deal.  Without further hesitation, here is Tricia.

Three Ways You Are A Leader in Everyday Life … and how to be a better one

Many people are confused about the term “family leader.” As I’ve blogged about moms being leaders I’ve had both men and women pipe up, “But wait, the man’s supposed to be the leader in the home, right?” Yes, but women are leaders, too, in many ways you may not realize.

1.  You are a Leader in Your Role As Spouse. Yes, friends, I believe in the “S” word … submission. I believe God has called men to be the spiritual head of the home, and the one to care for and provide for his wife and family and lead the family unit. I believe wives come under their headship in willing submission … yet women are leaders too.

Any time you strive to guide the thoughts, behavior or direction of another person we are a leader! Or as John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

Go ahead, read that again. Mom, you are a leader! Wife, you are a leader! Your thoughts and attitudes guide your closest relationships. Family leadership can be as intimate as offering words of guidance and encouragement to a discouraged loved one, or it can be as directive as issuing specific instructions on how to drive the family car.

2.  You are a Leader in Your Community. A man or a woman’s position as a family leader also extends beyond the four walls of the home. Just think of your roles at your work, at your child’s school, and in your neighborhood. Influence can also be exhibited in your roles as church volunteers and community leaders. These are important roles in our every day life, especially since many couples today are often not well-connected with siblings and parents. Many families are spread out, living far from extended family members. This causes many couples to create their own “family units” with like-minded friends. These are the people they vacation with and spend free time with. Seeking God in roles is important because it’s then couples realize they can be a positive influence in their church and community outside of their own home.

3.  You are a Leader in Your Extended Family. Sometimes this is the hardest place to be a leader. We can’t choose our relatives, and sometimes the relationships with parents, siblings, aunts, uncle and cousins can be the hardest. Often people are put into “roles” within their family. Yet in your actions and reactions you are showing leadership—whether you like it or not.

In each of these areas … you make an impact!

As a leader you …

  • Build enduring relationships within the home that can have far-reaching impact beyond the home
  • Set the basic direction of life values, character development and relational behavior
  • Involve seasons of personal sacrifice to promote the spiritual and physical well-being of others
  • Sustain love, loyalty, trust, mercy, forbearance, forgiveness, and sacrifice
  • Mature and grow
  • Foster values of love, compassion, trust, commitment, honesty, and grace within its members.

Think your role as a leader doesn’t matter? Think again. The #1 way you can be a better leader in each of these areas is to pray.

Today take a few minutes to pray for your role as a leader.

Pray for your leadership in your family.
Pray for your leadership in your church.
Pray for your leadership in your neighborhood.
Pray for your leadership at work and school.
Pray that God will show you how to lead.
Pray you will submit to His leadership in your life.

The impact we can have in the lives of people around us can’t be underestimated … and only prayer prepares us for the work ahead!

The Child Training Bible (CTB) Part 2!

CTB 5

It has been a couple months now that I have been using the CTB (Child Training Bible).  In simple terms, it is an amazing tool!  I must admit that I do not use it all the time.  However there is a notable difference in my Muppin’s behavior when I do!  And the only reason I don’t use it all the time is simply that I can be lazy… sigh.  I need to work on that 😉

I found out about CTB about 4 months ago and it truly intrigued me.  I mean really, use the Bible as a source of correction and growing up our kids?  Who would have ever thought of that?  Oh yeah, God!  lol  He is the most perfect parent and if we just lean on Him we can do what we need to as parents.  Anyway… I wanted one the first time I saw it.

Now the CTB takes a bit of work to put together but it is really pretty easy.  To see my thoughts on assembling the CTB click this link to my first review ~ The Child Training Bible (CTB)

When you order from CTB you don’t actually get a Bible, you get the CTB Chart Set but on that same order page there are convenient links to all the other supplies you will need as well.  You will need to get a Bible, and the Charts only fit a particular size so I recommend using the links on CTB‘s site to find one right for you.  You will also need highlighters or pens and tabs.  It is really pretty simple.

The idea behind CTB is when your child is acting in a way that isn’t Godly, such as arguing, then you go to the CTB and read to them the verses that talk about that and help them learn that they need to act differently because God created them to be different.  For a great video tutorial check it out here ~ CTB Video Tutorial.

For me, once my daughter was upset because she had been called on her attitude or whatever the situation was, it worked but didn’t have the desired affect I was hoping for.  So this is what I did.  Each day I took a section and we read the verses together in the morning, when we were both in a great mood.  We talked about them and discussed why they were good and why God wants us all to act in such a way to bring Glory to Him.  This seem to have the most influence on her.  During our time reading together she would bring up things she has done in the past that went against what we were reading and she had real remorse.  During the day she seems to stop herself quicker and she is easier to guide.

So for us this has been an amazing tool even though I had to use it slightly different than the way it is intended.  For my daughter I had to be proactive instead of just reactive.

CTB has truly been a blessing in our home.  I pray you take the time to check it out, I believe you will be blessed.  Thanks Mindy Dunn for letting the Lord work through you to create CTB.

If you have used CTB I would love to hear your feedback.  If you use something else to help bring your children into awareness of their behavior I would love to find out about that too!  God bless!

Disclaimer ~ I received the Child Training Bible Chart Set for free in order to provide you with this review.  However, all of these thoughts, ideas and opinions are my own and have been given with all honesty.  Thank you!

Lead Your Family Like Jesus

tricia goyer launch teamI am so excited!  I absolutely love Tricia Goyer and her writings.  She has some amazing books out there, fiction and non-fiction.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus:  Powerful Parenting Principles from the Creator of Families is Tricia’s new book  that will be coming out in a couple months.  I am so excited that I get to be part of her launch team and read this book soon.  If you don’t know much about it you can click on the picture and it will link you to the book so you can take a look at it and even pre-buy it.

Ken Blanchard wrote the amazing book Lead Like Jesus.  Tricia, Ken and Phil Hodges all worked together using the same principles in Ken’s book and have come up with this amazing new tool for parenting.  I for one and excited to get to read all that God has shown them.  Look for my new review of this book coming soon.

What is your favorite parenting book?  What was the best thing you took from that book that you feel is a life saver for your family?

Who did you bring with you?

God has really been talking to me lately.  As I shared in a previous post He has been talking to be about getting clean.  What I shared was about my eating and how God wants to clean that up.  Tonight though I am going to talk briefly about my faith… and how I am going to clean that up or make sure my priorities are right.

I don’t know if you know who Nick Vujicic is but he is an amazing man of God, he is a Serbian Australian evangelist and motivational speaker from Australia.  He happened to be born without arms or legs but you wouldn’t know it by his power in the Holy Spirit, his heart to please God and his love for Jesus Christ.  The true love and true faith and true power he holds because of his belief in Jesus Christ is awe inspiring and makes me long for more of what he has with the Lord.  It shows me that even though I have come so far in my life and my walk with God I have so far to go.  Thank goodness I have a patient and loving God right?!

I watched one of his sermons lately (he has many on Youtube) and I was struck by many things but in particular two different things he said really stood out to me.  First, we need to know the answers to three questions and if we don’t know those answers then we are literally disabled.  Disabled meaning that we are unable to do what we need to do.  Those three questions are this:

  1. Do you know who you are?
  2. Do you know why you are here?
  3. And do you know where you are going when you are not here?

Do you know the answers to these three questions?  I do, even if I don’t want to admit it sometimes because those answers can be intimidating.  I am a daughter of the King and I have been bought for a price and my life is about the business of my Father!  For now the business of my Father is raising a Godly young woman so that she grows up loving the Lord even more than I do, following Him all the days of her life!  My business is loving my husband the way God intended for me to, and helping him in all he is asked to do by our Father.  My business is showing the people around me His love, helping them any way that He leads me to.  My business is helping my church when I feel so lead by the Spirit, though that is not my main priority right now, it is my family.  I also know that on the day that I die or am caught up in the clouds when Jesus returns I will be with HIM in heaven… I long for that day.

peopleThe answer to that third question is what brings me to the second thing that Nick said that dug deep into my soul and spirit… On the day you meet the Lord Nick believes He is going to ask two questions:

  1. Do you know me?
  2. And… Who’d you bring with you?

I don’t want to answer no to those questions.  Can you say yes for sure without a shadow of a doubt to the first one?  Because if you can’t there is something in your heart you need to take care of.  If you can, what is your answer for number two?  Who did you bring???

Very powerful food for thought.  So powerful in fact it could be something satan can use to make you feel even more useless, pathetic and powerless than you might already feel.  Don’t let him!!!   Let those questions be the Holy Spirit gently tugging at your heart, bringing you closer to HIM!  You were fearfully and wonderfully made for a purpose.  God has YOU in HIS sights and has a beautiful plan for you and all your wounds.  I would love to talk to you about your answers to those questions.  I am placing Nick’s video below.  I encourage you to watch it, then I encourage you to ask yourself truthfully those questions again, but not with self condemnation but with hope in your future!

God bless you my friends!
